I think and yes this is only me talking and yes this is a generalization but for the most part Canadians or at least my fellow Toronto-ians have a knack for complaining about the weather. Cold or warm - what have you. But weirdest thing is that when it is cold we don’t really dress for the weather! Until recent years winter weather wear has become hip! Usually everyone tries to layer every other season then throw on a beat up black coat over it all.
On my last trip to Paris I noticed most people were wearing the down-filled Canadian goose jackets…who woulda thought?
Now I’m just waiting for the time these L.L.Bean rubber boots really hits the international market. They are super warm and comfy and besides all that why waste money on nice shoes that salt is going to eat up anyway?
One of the best shops for vintage shopping on the run and a definite must of any Paris trip is KILIWATCH. They have the best selection of vintage from all the vintage stores I’ve ever been in… like I mean the world …. I’m serious! So go go go, even it’s just to people watch.
Coralie + Lola caught my eye with their amazing hair and of course their style!
Coralie in her H&M geisha inspired sandals. I’ve covered this sort of sandal and sock combo before in London… what do you think?? I think it most things can work if you own it and really work it. Even if it probably doesn’t work on me.
Hiding in the market of Porte de Clignancourt is a pretties of jewelry shops. My mouth honestly salivates while browsing through each vignette. The whole time fantasizing how I would wear it and where I would go. I have to start coming up with events and start making purchases. Is it unrealistic to make this shop my only stop on my future wedding registrar?
Beyond the beauty of gems the owners Jason & Heidi Ellis are absolutely lovely people. These two Brits opened up shop in Paris and every time I visit the city it’s heart warming to check in on this store.
One of my favorite places to visit in Paris is Palais de Tokyo a place dedicated to modern and contemporary art. My travel friend I took an amazing culinary class which was part of a temporary exhibit, which I will definitely post photos of soon!
It’s also where I bumped into Mika and Jiyoung on their way to dinner.
***WHAT ARE YOU CERTIAN OF NO MATTER WHAT? / WHAT ARE YOU WAITING FOR THE RIGHT MOMENT TO DO? / WHO DO YOU MISS THE MOST? / IF GIVEN SOME MORE TIME WHO WOULD YOU SPEND IT WITH?
So Happy New Year! a couple of days late but no less meaningful. I hope everyone enjoyed they’re night with hopes of many more to come.
I usually don’t use this time of year to reflect but it suddendly dawned on me that yes 2011 is the year of the unknown for me…well as unknown as it can be. Hopefully in some months from now if I don’t drop the ball, I can finally have the masters that I’ve been working for. After that I’m just not sure where I’ll be. New York is always calling me but these days I’m thinking it can wait a little longer.
But whatever happens hopefully all good, I’m so excited for the unknown!
***THAT I AM LOVED + AND THAT I CAN LOVE / GRADUATE WITH FLYING COLOURS / YOU KNOW WHO YOU ARE & I MISS YOU MUCH / MY FAMILY + FRIENDS / ….AND IT WOULD BE NICE to meet a man who gives a damn haha
HERES TO 2011!
PS this was my new years eve outfit …. my boots are from Paris, and if your questioning them I ask you to wait 6 months and ask again!
As they say Paris truly is the pulse of fashion not only because it is at the epicenter of all that is luxury fashion but because beyond that it still has room to hold various fashion sub-cultures.
It’s also where I met Chloe and Helene who are fans of Lolita fashion. The infamous look that spawned from certain regions of Japan and was more so exposed to western on lookers by the popular street style photography of Shoichi Aoki in his book ; FRUITS. The original look depicted a victorian princess adorned with lace and ribbon, but today it has grown into many branches of variation ie. Gothic Lolita.
A couple of the stores that started with the movement back in the 80’s (I had no idea it started in the 80’s!) like Angelic Pretty and The Stars Shine Bright can be found in Paris.
Chole took sometime to let me how popular it is even in Paris! Check out the video below….YES! it is my first ever Perfect Pairing video…and Yes! I know my gorilla technique needs work.
I find myself attracted to a boot with a great shape just like the perfect coat should be tailored to your body. Maybe a nice leather boot could enhance the shape of your legs, perhaps? Her Ralph Lauren boots allude to the infamous riding boot but dressed up with hardware made with traditional good quality crying to be worn out.
Walking through the alley’s of the Porte de Clignancourt market there’s always an air of excitement because at any turn you might bump into something really special. I love rummaging through things but more so waiting for that stimulating sense that is conjured when my eyes catch something I just have to have. This trip I splurged on vintage jewelry! But I’ll get to that for another post.
Here I met Ana strolling through the market, while sporting the layered winter look. I was really fond of this nomad layering for the season outfit. Something I found myself doing with the crazy Paris weather. The trick is that if not controlled the look can easily become “homeless” but it’s all about the assemblage of patterns and knits and colours! Just because it’s dreary out doesn’t mean you have to be.
The umber effect on her boots are obviously not purposefully but like most leather- winter wear it always looks better worn.
This is probably the cutest winter cape I’ve seen all season. I love the idea of wrapping yourself in a blanket and pulling it off as a coat, so this quilted cape brings both worlds together (this is not an open window for outer-wear snuggie!)
Last weekend I checked out the MMK’s Not in Fashion exhibit which was clearly over shadowed by a juxtaposed exhibit that was a bit over saturated with nudity. Which I don’t have a problem with, but for once I’d like to find myself at a contemporary museum where the human body is not exploited then maybe just maybe art will be provoking again.
So it was obvious that the photo below struck me the most, yes because of its nostalgic allure and they appear to be fully clothed but also because the MMK has some sneaky curators who know how to emphasize a photo by blowing it up. Then wait for you to turn the corner and ta da! —Let us impress you with our black and white photo but BIGGER than the other b/w photos you’ve already seen. Sometimes its not the product that impresses me the most but the thought behind the pitch.
(a subtle disconnect between old friends)
Nevertheless, like you I instantly thought of the early 90’s, then Nirvana then my tween self being taught how to head-bang by my close family friend at age 12…ya I was the coolest. I got to thinking if any of those people knew each other in the photo and if they do, do they still talk and if so, do they know they’re in an exhibit in Frankfurt, Germany? Would they still pick up the phone and call each other? Or did they have a falling out? But all whilst knowing how beautiful the moment was.
We might not be able to relive or retake that photo but lets have a Coffee and Cigarette’s moment and talk about the good old days. Those days that we can only remember with good thoughts and anything that came after could go to hell. Or lets not because I hate nostalgia. I miss you, too bad we can’t talk like we used to.
ps. I’m trying to stick to my new motto : don’t pick up the phone if you know your not going to hear what you want to hear.
My new found friend, Goga just returned from his summer rendezvous in Paris and threw a stylish party with all electro and drinks to help celebrate with a sense of french flare. Here are some snaps from the event!
Sara is the perfect example of fall sweater weather. The textures the knits and of course all tied together with a belt. Just because it’s getting chilly outside doesn’t me you have to loose your silhouette. If it’s hard to find your self in the balloon like forms this season then find your waist line and high light it.
**accent all the deep colours that are in trend this season with bright jewels
** get the vintage lace up boots from the frankfurt market
***also take a tip from mens wear: if your going to belt it - it’s nice to match the HUE TO YOUR SHOE!
your perfect pairing song of the day - yea i just started it
I’m a sucker for reading into song lyrics. Getting lost in relating to the words to my own situations. Sometimes the best songs are the ones I indulge in and even restrain myself from listening to if it conjures up memories.
For me lyrics are like having expectations in life; at times you really shouldn’t to only avoid the let downs but what is life without it’s wants? Why should we deny ourselves that which makes circumstances sweeter? or even bitter sweet?
So let go of your inhibitions and let the cards fall where they may. The world needs more people that accept their compulsions.
Whether it’s a pair of pumps that scream a bit too stripper or a song that lingers in your heart. I’m saying it’s okay to follow however you feel with honesty.
With that being said the perfect pairing song is the LOVERS - BOXER. Listen to the tune on myspace.
What a drag not to know how you are, or which of us got the raw deal.
I was a dagger but in whose heart?
I was the dirt beneath whose wheel?
Boxer, don't knock me down.
Writer, don't write me out.
Stranger, let's not stay estranged.
Lover, are we going separate ways?
And don't I get a say?
Hey, hey, hey.
What a drag not to know how you are.
What a drag not to know how you feel.
I tore the banner around your heart.
I tore the banner that said "ideal."
Today I'm thinking of you in a new way.
The Frankfurt market is probably the best way to scout out the cities more fashionable people while bargaining on an a beautiful vintage snake skin bag…ehhm yea I did a little damage this weekend.
The market is also where I met Georgi Ambarzumjan and his girlfriend, who turned out to be actual interesting people living in Frankfurt! Who woulda thought! (don’t mind my north american attitude) Now your in luck too because Georgi has great blog more geared to mens wear and has even done time on Parsian street style blogs.
Check out his blog and snaps from Paris and footage of Paris Fashion week. - great shots from the Yohji Yamamoto show — GOGA A PARIS
